Treck SMTP is a Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) client that enables embedded devices to send email to any SMTP server. This allows an embedded device to send asynchronous status reports using the most universal Internet application, email. For example, a network printer using Treck SMTP could send an email to a system administrator when consumables such as toner or paper need to be replenished; or to the printer vendor’s service organizations when preventive maintenance needs to be scheduled.
Another use of email “push” technology is to manage networked populations of machines. Individual vending machines are increasingly attached to Web servers, but a large-scale population of machines would benefit from email technology.
Treck SMTP facilitates remote management of a network of vending machines by enabling each machine to send its daily report on sales and inventory to a central site via email. This point-of-sale data can then be used to determine the profitability of each machine, the best mix of products for each machine, and when to restock a machine. In addition, status alerts for coin jams, internal temperature changes, and stock outages can be sent as needed.
- Sends pure-text messages, messages with attachments, HTML messages, or HTML messages with embedded graphics (MHTML), and is compliant with all the relevant RFCs. Mail readers that come with Netscape Communicator and MS Internet Explorer 4.0 are capable of reading “HTML mail” (as is the newest version of Eudora).
- Messages may be constructed with static information and/or dynamic device data. If Treck SMTP is used with Treck RomPager Embedded Web Server, the insertion of dynamic device data into a message uses the same field-proven memory saving technology. In fact, the same page may be sent both as a response to a browser request and as a spontaneous status report sent via email.
